We are Wasps, Scotland’s studio specialists. Home to Scotland’s biggest cultural community, we develop redundant, historic buildings into beautiful facilities for artists and creative businesses, regenerating communities across Scotland.
We are now one step closer to opening the doors to Inverness Creative Academy as construction works for the final phase go on site! Inverness Creative Academy is our £5.7m flagship project in the Highlands, based in the two B-listed Inverness Royal Academy ‘Midmills’ buildings in the heart of the city. The project is being delivered in two phases, one building at a time. We completed the £2.2m transformation of the 1913 building in Nov 2018, bringing it back into use and creating 31 studio spaces, plus workshop and events spaces.
Phase 2 is the most significant phase of the development. This £3.5m project will transform the original 1895 Academy building, doubling the amount of creative workspaces and restoring the grand former assembly hall to introduce an inspiring public events, gallery and meeting space.
Bancon Construction are leading construction works on this final phase and started works on site in January 2020. We have secured most of the money to complete our Midmills transformation, but must raise a final £500,000 to reach our overall target and realise our full ambition for Inverness Creative Academy, artists, makers, creators and communities in the Highlands.
What’s the story so far?
Wasps acquired the Midmills building, formerly Inverness Royal Academy and latterly Inverness College, following evidenced demand for a central home for the creative people of the Highlands. These buildings had been lying vacant, deteriorating and subject to vandalism since 2015. After completing Phase 1 (predominantly Artists and Makers studio space) demand for this facility and access to these wonderful buildings has been further proven. Phase 2 will finally open Inverness Creative Academy to the public, providing a central meeting place to support a vibrant and connected creative community, introducing a unique cultural destination at the heart of the City where everyone can enjoy art and creativity.
Wasps has now been operating for 42 years with a strong track record of securing and redeveloping buildings for arts use in communities across Scotland and we are thrilled to be leading the next stage of the Midmills journey to create the Highlands’ first major creative hub.
Wasps’ core operations are designed to be fully sustainable through rental income once up and running, however, as a Charity we must raise funds to be able to create our facilities. Any support is vital to ensuring that our vision is delivered. Your generosity means Wasps can keep delivering our mission to provide space and support activities in which creators can prosper.
